Academics / Achievements :
Dr. Kannan graduated from Madurai Medical College with several gold medals and academic distinctions (completed in 1993). He did postgraduation in Pediatrics at PGIMER (1994-1996), Chandigarh and had his basic cardiology training at JIPMER, Pondicherry where he worked as senior resident in Cardiology. He was the topper in DM (Cardiology) at Srichitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, Trivandrum (1999 to 2001). He obtained the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) degree in Cardiology in the same year. Thereafter, he chose to do ‘Fellowship in Pediatric cardiology’ at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Cochin. He continued to work in the same institute as a faculty for the next 5 years and had enormous experience in performing complex interventional procedures. Commonwealth council of UK awarded him ‘Fellowship in interventional cardiology’ and he could fine tune his cardiac interventional skills at Guy’s and St.Thomas hospitals, London. Currently, he is working as a consultant interventional and pediatric cardiologist at Vadamalayan Hospitals, Madurai.
Dr. Kannan has got 24 research publications in national and international journals. He was a co-investigator for a large ICMR study on rheumatic fever and an international study in pulmonary hypertension, sponsored by Pfizer. He has conducted many workshops and conferences at many centers in India and Srilanka. He has authored 6 chapters in various cardiology books. Well known for his teaching skills, Dr. Kannan is a routine speaker in many forums including Cardiological Society of India. He is currently associate editor of the journal ‘Annals of Pediatric Cardiology’
Dr. Kannan has specialized in transradial coronary angioplasty. He routinely performs interventional procedures in small babies including septostomy, valvotomy and device closures of various cardiac defects. He runs fetal clinic where he performs fetal echocardiography to diagnose and treat heart diseases in the fetus. He is involved in training many operators in various other centers.
